Great question. Yes, since version 3.0 only introduces 3.0 firmware for the 3040, you can use this 2.9.0.HB version for your 2XXX series APs along side it.
We do have an upcoming vWLAN version 3.0.1 which will incorporate all of this into one code release with matching names. This is 4-5 weeks away.
