Intellifi Solution Glossary

Acronym Term Definition
  Intellifi Adtran’s cloud-managed Wi-Fi solution is a part of the Residential Wi-Fi portfolio. The Adtran Intellifi solution consists of three main products: The Service delivery gateways (SDGs) running SmartOS 12. x and higher, the Intellifi app and Intellifi MeshView, the cloud-management portal to view, manage and troubleshoot subscriber issues. Intellifi is a part of the Mosaic One SaaS suite and is delivered as a SaaS subscription to service providers.
  Intellifi Legacy It is sometimes referred to as Intellifi 1.0. It is a set of mesh features (together called Intellifi) within SmartOS and is supported on the legacy SR400 and SE80 residential gateways. Intellifi legacy does not support or include the mobile app or Intellifi MeshView.
  Intellifi App The Intellifi app is the subscriber interface to the in-home network. The Intellifi app allows end-subscribers or end-users to install and configure their Wi-Fi and personalize their home network via device and user profiles, guest access, and enhanced content filters. The mobile app is available on both IoS and Android app stores.
  Intellifi MeshView Intellifi MeshView is a service provider’s cloud management, trouble resolution, and experience management portal. Intellifi MeshView is a SaaS application available as an annual subscription. Intellifi MeshView provides visibility into an individual subscriber’s home environment to help identify, diagnose, and resolve issues quickly, avoiding truck rolls. Intellifi MeshView can be accessed via the Mosaic One dashboard.
  Node Any Adtran Service Delivery Gateway (SDG 800 and 8600 Series) running SmartOS 12.xx and higher. In the Intellifi environment, a node can be either a standalone Wi-Fi controller or a mesh satellite inside a subscriber’s home.
  Controller

An Adtran SDG (800 or 8600 Series) that acts as the primary Intellifi node within a home or mesh Wi-Fi. The controller serves as the hub or root of the network tree and provides management and control functions for all connected nodes on the home network. Firmware upgrade functions are pushed to a controller, which in turn pushes upgrades to nodes in the network.

SAT Mesh Satellite An Adtran SDG (node) connected to a controller, either wirelessly or wired, creates a mesh Wi-Fi network. You can connect up to four mesh satellites to a controller, with a total of 5 nodes.
  Role This refers to the Intellifi Mesh Role. At any given time, a node should have a role  - Controller, Mesh Satellite, or None (when there is no role, the node does not participate in the Intellifi Mesh).
  Intellifi Network A residential Wi-Fi network deployment comprised of one or more Intellifi nodes, with one of the nodes acting as the Controller.
  Claim a Controller During installation, the end user/subscriber or field technician needs to “claim a controller.” This is the process of adding a node to the Wi-Fi network and assigning that node the role of a Controller. A controller is a node connected to the broadband modem via an Ethernet cable or directly to the fiber network via a pluggable SFP+ optical network terminal (ONT).
  On-boarding

The process of adding Controllers and Satellites to the Intellifi network.

  • For a Controller: the process of adding a Controller to the Intellifi inventory. Occurs when the Controller boots for the first time and it checks-in to the Intellifi Cloud. The on-boarding is successful only if the Controller is properly set up for Intellifi (i.e., it is associated with a  valid service provider/tenant).
  • For a Satellite: the process of adding a Satellite to an existing Controller.
  Wi-Fi Backhaul This is the Wi-Fi link between two Intellifi nodes, usually between a Controller and the mesh Satellite. As the name implies, the backhaul network backhauls traffic from the mesh satellites to the Controller. The Wi-Fi backhaul link can be either a physical Ethernet cable connecting the Controller and node(s), or a wireless connection via a dual-band or tri-band mesh link.
  Wi-Fi Fronthaul

This is the wireless link (Wi-Fi link) between an Intellifi Node or Controller and its associated client stations (STAs) or end client devices. The Wi-Fi fronthaul link between the Node and the end-client device (STA) works on either 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands (for Wi-Fi 6) or 6GHz (for Wi-Fi 6E and higher) networks.

  Client Steering Client steering is the process by which an Intellifi Node (Controller or mesh Satellite) guides an STA or end-client device to connect to a specific Node in the mesh network or frequency band (2.4GHz, 5GHz, or 6GHz). Client steering is accomplished through 802.11k/r/v mechanisms (for intelligent clients) or forced-steering methods for non-802.11k/r/v-compliant client devices. Client steering aims to improve the user experience and optimize performance.
  Devices Any devices that connect to the subscriber's in-home network, or the Intellifi network, using wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) interfaces.
  Mobile Device A device (per the definition above) that operates using an iOS or Android operating system, where the subscriber can download, install, and use the Intellifi Mobile app.
  Subscriber A service provider’s end customer. In the Intellifi environment, a subscriber needs to have a registered email account and is the primary user of the mobile app.
  Subscriber Network A collection of nodes (SDGs) and devices that form a part of the subscriber’s home Wi-Fi network. The data on a subscriber’s network passes through a single primary connection to the internet from a single subscriber site.
  Premises A subscriber’s home or location where the subscriber’s Intellifi-based Wi-Fi network is deployed.
  Tenant of ISP These are synonyms for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Communications Service Provider (CSP). In the Intellifi environment, an ISP is assigned a cloud tenant on the production instance of Mosaic One, with access to their instance of Intellifi MeshView.
  User A user, typically an employee of an ISP, who has a user account on Intellifi MeshView to view, diagnose, and troubleshoot subscriber networks. The user can access Intellifi MeshView through their assigned Mosaic One instance.
  Profile A virtual representation of a person that connects to an Intellifi Network with one or more devices.

SDG Service Delivery Gateway The product family that implements an Intellifi Node. In the context of the Intellifi solution, the residential gateway’s proper terminology is Node.
