1535p appear to be polarity sensitive despite documentation?

I just deployed an Adtran 1535p ActivReach switch on an Avaya IP Office installation.  With the ports set as 'mode ActivReach', the phones would not come up.  So I set it forced 10M and the phones still wouldn't come up.  I then flipped polarity and the phones started coming up.  I know ActivReach documentation states that it is not polarity sensitive, but why does that appear to be the case in my situation?
