Multiple connections EOC and ADSL2+

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this? If not please advise.

We have 2 customers that are in the process of upgrading.
They are looking at similar scenario's.

Customer 1
Wants 2 ADSL connections coming into their office,
From different suppliers, for redundancy.
Connection A would be used for their VoIP service.
Connection B would be used for their Email, Web, Internet.
What they would like is if one of the connections go down, all traffic would go through the remaining service.
Could there be a fall back as well?

Customer 2
Wants 1 ADSL connection and an Ethernet over Copper connection, the EOC would present a /30 ip range
The ADSL would be used for their Web, Internet.
The EOC would be used for their Mail server (Exchange) and Terminal server access.
What they would like is if one of the connections go down, all traffic would go through the remaining service.
Could there be a fall back as well?

Re: Multiple connections EOC and ADSL2+

Tom:

Assuming for the moment that the ADSL2+ connection is handed off to our unit as ethernet (via an external ADSL modem, which is something we recommend), then our unit would need to accommodate a total of 3 ethernet ports - WAN1, WAN2, and LAN. For the failover function you would need  features like Policy Based Routing and Network Monitor to keep track of what connections are up and what traffic goes where.

All of these could be done by the NetVanta 3448 router easily and this would be true for both of your customer scenarios.

Yes.  We do this quite a bit.  It's a fairly complex setup.  You need probe/tracked objects pinging the gateway and route maps to source each type of traffic out the proper interface with NAT.  VoIP devices will have to re-register to the fallback provider so keep your server registration times relatively short.  Voice calls in progress during a failure or recovery will drop, obviously.

For incoming email, you'll need a secondary MX record to the backup link.

Fallback should occur automatically.  Keep the recovery time on your tracked objects relatively long so as not to create a lot of churn.  Typically we fail over when the track is down for a minute and require it to be back and stable for ten minutes to recover.

Depending on the platform you may need to trunk to a switch and use VLANs to get enough physical Ethernet ports.

Similar setup as before.  For hosted terminal server either a dynamic DNS to detect failure or have two hostnames for main and backup and instruct the clients to try the backup should the main one fail.

Hi Ronnie

Finally the customer has decided to go ahead, after numerous committee meetings.

What ADSL modem would you recommend for the ADSL incoming ethernet hand off?

Re: Multiple connections EOC and ADSL2+

Hi Jay

Do we need the Advance feature Pack to implement this scenario?

Tom:

We don't have a recommendation. The ADSL service provider would supply that modem as part of their service so the customer doesn't normally get a choice.

Hi Ronnie.

We are the ISP as well, Just a bit sick of crappy modems, promising everything but not delivering.

Re: Multiple connections EOC and ADSL2+

- The enhanced feature pack only provides access to VPN and VQM capabilities on an AOS device. All other data features are available in the standard feature pack. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
