NV3120 Won't Negotiate with ADSL Account

Good afternoon,

I have a Netvanta 3120 running firmware NV3120A-R10-9-5-E.biz, that was working perfectly well with a cable modem.  It has since been moved to a location with ADSL from Bell Canada, but when configured to PPPoE PAP, it gets stuck at initial negotiation of the ADSL service.

Here are 2 lines from the PPPoE debug, all other lines were similar to this with a different Xid:

2014.10.18 02:40:08 PPPOE.CLIENT Sending PADI Message: Xid = 0xa2177588

2014.10.18 02:40:13 PPPOE.CLIENT Sending PADI Message: Xid = 0xa2177589

The service is coming via a Bell SageMcomm Fast modem that has been configured as a bridge.  When the same ADSL account information is configured in Internet Explorer of a notebook connected to the same port on the Bell modem, the Internet works perfectly.  When the same ADSL account information is configured in a Linksys EA6200 home router, it works perfectly.  If I configure the Bell modem as the router it works perfectly.

Why will the NV3120 not negotiate and set up the ADSL service?

Please help as I need to get this client's VPN running.

Thank you in advance!

Andre Laurence

Re: NV3120 Won't Negotiate with ADSL Account

Hi Andre,

Have you tried using CHAP instead of PAP to see if it makes a difference.  However, I think that your problem is caused by the wrong ATM encapsulation.  Login into the modem and change the ATM enc from VC-MUX to LLC or vice versa and see if it makes a difference.  Your ISP's instructions would help you choosing the right parameters and thereafter you should be able to receive PPPoE responses when you debug your Netvanta during authentication.

Hope this helps.

Re: NV3120 Won't Negotiate with ADSL Account

Good afternoon Mick,

Thank you for the reply.  I had tried both CHAP and PAP, but knew and confirmed with Bell that it has to be PAP.  The encapsulation is not something I have tried though so I will keep note of it, however since I needed to get the client up and running as quickly as possible since their phone lines are VoIP, I set the Bell modem up as a router with IP address reservation for the 3120 and added it to the DMZ.  So far this has all worked as it should and I can't bring them down to try your suggestion.

When I go back on site next week, if I am able to bring down the Internet without disrupting their work I will try it.

Thanks again!

Andre
