OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

Hi there I have a Gen 2 3200 - updated to 15.12.00 firmware.   I'm getting this error no matter how I configure Email Forwarding.  We use gmail/g-suite so I've tried the following for servers:

smtp-relay.gmail.com

smtp.gmail.com

aspmx.l.google.com

Getting this error no matter what I put in there.  HELP!

Thanks

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

IS DNS configured properly and working? Can you ping any of those hosts by hostname?

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

Hi there thanks for the reply - I'm a little new to these devices however under Hostname/DNS we have a hostname set MAIN2FARM.  Domain is set correctly as is the DNS IP address.  Secondary is set to 8.8.8.8 (Google Public) - Enable DNS Lookup is checked/enabled.  Enable DNS Proxy is unchecked/disabled.

Under Add/Modify/Delete DNS Host Entries there are no DNS host entries defined.

I can ping the device by IP address but NOT by name "MAIN2FARM".

Let me know if you need more info.  Thanks again!

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

Can you, from the Gen 2 3200, successfully get a response from the following commands:

ping smtp-relay.gmail.com

ping smtp.gmail.com

ping aspmx.l.google.com

Hi there sorry I'm still a little new to these devices - how do you run a ping command from the device itself?

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

Connect to the console serial port or telnet to the IP address of the device.

SP2MAIN>ping smtp-relay.gmail.com

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 173.194.216.28, timeout is 2 seconds:

Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 32/35.0/38 ms

SP2MAIN>ping smtp.gmail.com

Type CTRL+C to abort.

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

Have you tried just specifying the destination email address and letting the unit determine the appropriate server? I'm showing that for gmail.com the mail exchanger is "gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com", but the hostnames you listed do indeed respond on SMTP port 25. Is there a firewall between this device and the Internet that could be blocking port 25 outbound?

Alternatively, use your local on-net mail host (Exchange server or whatever) as the server.

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

I take it you mean leave the server entry blank? I just set it to that.  I'm not sure what the interval is for the email forwarding - there isn't a 'TEST' button or any way to actually force it.  Yes there is a firewall (Dell Sonicwall) but we have lots of devices behind it sending SMTP emails over port 25 - I don't think that's it.  Thanks for all your input!  I set the server to blank for now - we'll see what happens.

On the inside of the firewall on the same LAN as your 3200, is there a mail server such as Exchange, Postfix, etc. that is used by clients to send mail? If so, specify its internal IP as the server.

Large mail providers such as Gmail employ some rather strict anti-spam measures requiring that email sources have proper DNS entries forward and reverse as well as other parameters such as SPF and the like. Is the device's email address properly configured to be within your domain?

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

Hi no we don't use Exchange we use G-Suite (Google) and gMail.   The device email address is support@ourdomain.com and is used on multiple devices (routers, firewall, printers) throughout the domain without any problem.  Like I mentioned I'm getting SMTP email from all of our devices - except these (we have 4 total).   This interface seems to be the least forgiving in terms of available settings to configure outbound email too.

Re: OPERATING_SYSTEM.SMTP Could not connect to email server.

What is the interval this unit sends the logs?  I blanked out the email server and now not getting errors but not getting mail either.  What does the email even look like?
