How to set up WAN bridging

Bridge features may be configured for WAN service on the gateway. As a bridge, it merely passes data along to the next destination.

In most IPTV configurations, a data service plus a bridged WAN service are present. Interface grouping is commonly employed here.

WARNING: Once a WAN service is configured as a bridge, it cannot be modified. When it is desired to no longer use it as a bridge, the WAN service must be deleted then recreated.

Preparation

Configure the type of Layer 2 interface to be used with the bridge.

Step-by-step guide

Configure a WAN service as a bridge:

  1. Log into the gateway.
  2. In the left navigation menu, click Advanced Setup > WAN Service.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Select the desired layer 2 interface.  Click Next.
  5. On the next WAN Service Configuration page, select the Bridging option.
  6. Configure the remaining settings as needed and click Next. The WAN Setup – Summary page appears.
  7. Review the settings, then click Apply/Save.

(Optional) Create a new interface group:

  1. In the left navigation menu, click Advanced Setup > Interface Grouping.
  2. Click Add (below the table).
  3. Enter a unique Group Name, then proceed with either step 3 (dynamic) or step 4 (static) below.
  4. If this new grouped interface is to share the WAN interface, click Shared WAN Interface. Not selecting this option this will cause the WAN interface select to be removed from any other interface groups.
    Important:
If a vendor ID is configured for a specific client device, make sure to reboot the client device attached to the gateway to allow it to obtain an appropriate IP address.
  5. Map the ports for the WAN or LAN interface:
    1. Select an interface from the applicable Available Interface list.
    2. Add it to the Grouped Interface list by clicking the arrow to create the required mapping of the ports. Hold down the Shift key to select multiple interfaces.
Note: Depending on the WAN interface configuration, these clients may obtain public IP addresses.
  6. To automatically add LAN clients (such as set-top boxes) to a WAN Interface in the new group, enter the DHCP vendor ID string. Up to 16 vendor IDs may be added.
  7. When configuring a DHCP vendor ID string, any DHCP client request that includes this vendor ID is denied an IP address from the local DHCP server (DHCP option 60).
  8. Click Apply/Save to commit your changes.

For more information about using the GUI to configure your gateway, refer to the User Manual for the specific model in use.

Troubleshooting

If the device only has a bridged WAN service configured, LAN connectivity may be lost. In this case, setting the LAN to a static IP (in the workstation Network Adapter settings) may resolve the issue.
