FXS port enables then disables .. 2012.08.08 12:01:51 FXS.0/13 Fault Condition Cleared: Port available

This is the second device this week we are seeing this issue with. Concerns are that this port is now dead, not useable.

the following error just keeps scrolling when logged into the TA-924.

The problem is your polarity is wrong. Tip and ring must be set correctly otherwise the port will continue to reset. try switching your tip and ring around and see if that helps.

One more thing if switching your tip and ring dose not work than you may have a dead short. Check your cabling to make sure there are no frays or bare copper showing.

Tom,

What Dayo said is correct, you need to address this ASAP, it is a wiring issue and if you don’t address it, it will destroy your FXS port.

From our training material:

show interface fxs 0/1

Common problem is port is shutdown or wiring issue.

If port shows DOWN (not Administratively Down), it could be fault on line, wires could be crossed; therefore you should manually shut down the port…

Every 30 seconds, the gateway will attempt to bring the line up. (If you do a show events, you would see the events populated in there.)

If it continues, then it could destroy the port, and then you would have to ship the unit back to ADTRAN for repair.

99% of the time it’s a wiring issue if you get this far into troubleshooting.

You will NOT ALWAYS see a fault condition if wiring issues were present…

The following list are some conditions that can cause a fault/will not cause a fault:

Shorting RING to ground will cause the fault.

Shorting Port X's TIP to Port Y's RING will cause the fault. (Most common)

Shorting TIP to ground will NOT cause the fault.

Shorting TIP and RING together will NOT cause the fault.

Shorting Port X's TIP to Port Y's TIP will NOT cause the fault.

Shorting Port X's RING to Port Y's RING will NOT cause the fault.

Reversing TIP and RING on a handset will NOT cause the fault.

See your product’s Hardware Installation Guide in the Support Forums for correct pinouts.

Temperature Fault - shutting down for 30 seconds

Fault Condition: Possible cabling issue - Port disabled for 30 seconds

These indicate that an FXS port is going into shutdown for 30 seconds to prevent any damage to the analog SLIC. During this time, there will be no battery (-48V DC) applied to the port. After the 30 second period has expired, the SLIC will then check the two-wire status. If the short is no longer present, the port will switch to active. If there is still a short applied, the port will go back into the shutdown state and the temperature fault will be displayed to the screen.

**If you do see this behavior on a port, we recommend manually shutting down that specific port else you risk damaging the other 3 ports that the SLIC drives
