vlan between buildings using (2) 1238s over aerial fiber line?

Jump to solution

Has anyone setup a point to point VLAN over aerial fiber with two Netvanta 1238 managed switches?  I currently have one end of this setup using an old cisco asa5505 and would like to take that firewall/router out of the setup...using simply the two switches...

Thank you for asking this question in the support community.  Typically, when connecting two switches together a trunk port is used.  This is what I would recommend, based on what I know of your network, for this design as well.  Configuring the ports connecting the switches as trunk ports will allow multiple VLANs to traverse the link.  The command switchport mode trunk configures the port in trunking mode.

If you would like to ask any questions or provide additional information about your network or setup, please do not hesitate to reply, I will be happy to help in any way I can.

For additional information about VLANs and trunking, I recommend reviewing the following post:  https://supportforums.adtran.com/message/2632#2632

Levi, I apoligize for the delayed response...we've been blessed/overwhelmed with growth over the last few months and I simply have not been diligent in response to your suggestion.  The local Adtran group that I was bringing in to assit backed off and we may not need this setup as we may have to completely move to a bigger building all together due to our recent growth and this project would no longer be necessary.  However, as a temporary reprive we're still considering the expansion next door again and this setup would come into play...

How's this?

I'd like to continue our discussion more in depth but am hesitant about posting too much about our setup online.  Could we take this offline or to email instead and I'll give you a much more detailed outline of our setup and what I'm looking to do...then we could post a 'cliff notes' version of everything back into this thread for others to take advantage of if they find the info useful?
