Extreme Networks APs not getting enough power, maybe?

Jump to solution

I am not positive it is a power issue, but everything seems to point to it.

We have several Adtran 1550 switches that in the last year+ have not been playing well with our APs. As long as the AP is in place it seems to work fine. But when I try adding a new one or moving one, they just don't seem to get enough power.

The switches have plenty of available power, so that doesn't appear to be the issue. I even have tried on one of our switches that has no other PoE device connected. Full 370W available, but when I plug in the AP, it never appears to get sufficient power. It seems to peak at 3.8W.

The APs are all Aerohive/Extreme, and I have tested with AP130, AP230 and AP305c. If I leave them plugged in, they sometimes eventually connect - I mean days later! But mostly they don't.

This happens whether the cable is 100ft or 6 ft, cat5e or 6. So different switches, different APs and different cables have been tried.

What would cause the DENIED? I have not changed any settings on these switches.

When I connect the AP to our Aruba core switch, it connects immediately and pulls at about 5.35W.

I need to upgrade some of my APs but I can't! This is becoming critical.

I have been told Adtran are generally used in phone systems. They were put in place by our previous buildings and grounds director. But these all used to work on these switches.

In the end this was an AP issue. Using a power injector between the switch and the AP brought the AP online. I then ran the newest update on the AP. After doing this, I could remove the power injector and connect it directly to the switch port.

They must have had a bad update or two that just didn't work with the Adtran switches.

I have now gotten 4 new APs in place using this process.

I should add, connecting non-PoE devices works as expected. They get an IP based on the port/vlan.

The only issue is with PoE devices.
