INTERFACE_STATUS.giga-swx 0/13 changed state to up and down and up and down.......

Hello,

We have just invested in replacing all our CISCO equipment with Netvanta switches, routers, firewall, AND replaced the hodgepodge of wifi with BlueSocket WVLAN and associated Access Points.

On all of the 1500 and 1600 series I am getting situations where ports go Up and Down and Up and Down (see copy of log file below).

It doesn't matter if the port has a connection to a desktop computer or if it's a POE connection to a BlueSocket AP.  In fact, in some instances I'm even seeing where the fiber links between the switches themselves go up and down.

This is becoming a REAL nuisance - especially with the access points as it can take up to 3 minutes for an access point to check in with the VWLAN controller, and this means multiple serious disruptions to our school day.

I've opened a trouble ticket three days ago, but have not had any response.  So I'm opening this up to the community to see if anyone else has had this problem.

And, YES,  have upgraded the firmware on some of the switches to the R11.4.3 for the specific model, and NO it did not make a difference.

Hi lschaedle:

Did you get a response from tech support?  I haven't experience this issue before, other than for typical circumstances such as BSAPs updating firmware or PCs rebooting.  Could there be a cable issue?  You can test cabling from the switch; see Cable Diagnostics Troubleshooting Guide‌.

It really concerns me that you're seeing backbone links go down too.  Are your switches interconnected in a ring or loop?  You'll need be careful with Spanning Tree configuration in such a case.  The guide Configuring Spanning Tree in AOS‌ contains a really good overview and configuration examples.

Sometimes I'm surprised by the amount of legitimate link state changes in a switch or stack.  Were your previous switches showing you similar event output?  You can disable these event notifications with the command no events from the enable prompt as needed.

Some shots in the dark, I guess.  Hopefully tech support already helped you resolve the issue!

Re: INTERFACE_STATUS.giga-swx 0/13 changed state to up and down and up and down.......

I did get a request for more information.  I plan on collecting it and sending it in, However, I was also able to get a technician from the vendor/reseller to come on site and spend a few hours looking at everything, and while I would really like to say it was something simple like a firmware or a feature upgrade, the real problem with one of the switches was the UPS - with the new switch installation, I also deployed some rack mount UPS's.  You can probably guess where this is going....that's right - the batteries failed.  What I thought was a switch problem turned out to be the power going on and off.....  I have new batteries on order and this will hopefully resolve this issue.

We are also experiencing problems with our new ActiveReach installation with the remote units going up and down as well..... turns out that the ActiveReach may not be as forgiving as our old HDSL equipment and our copper plant may be compromised.  I'm currently looking for a tech in our area that can troubleshoot copper problems.

Interesting case!  If you learn anything noteworthy from the remaining efforts, please share.
